Day 8 - Lake Titikaka

Recorded by Dimitry and Yo

Today we woke up at 6 o’clock with a 6:30 breakfast that consisted of fried cheese and potatoes. Today was particularly sad because we had to leave our adopted families. Even in those depressing moments, our family members helped us carry our luggage. After a group photo on the path we had built, our group proceeded to travel to the island of Tequille via motorboat. On the island we were given a brief history lesson on the creation of South America and the mountains and lakes that exist there. For example, Lake Titicaca was created when two mountain ranges formed capturing the salt water in the ocean.

After our history lesson and a brief hike through the rocky terrain, we arrived in an area in which we were explained the culture of the people living there. For example, a man wearing a hat tilted to his right signifies that they are content, while a hat tilted to his left signifies sadness. Also a red and white hat signals to the community that they are single, a rainbow/colorful hat signals a position of power or authority.

Afterwards we arrived at a beach in which we reentered our boat. After a short ride we arrived at another island where we were given a safety briefing regarding kayaking.

Afterwards group one entered the water while the second group took pictures from our motorboat. Then the roles reversed and pictures were taken of group two.

After our time on the water kayaking we had lunch which consisted of wheat soup, and a variety of meats under the ground. Yes, underground. Before acquiring the food we prayed to Mother Earth and Father Sky in order to have a blessed meal. The prayers payed off since the meal was blessed.

After our delicious meal, we set off back to the mainland. On our way there we were caught by some choppy waves. Our engines had captured some algae that was uplifted which slowed us down, but didn’t prevent us from reaching the mainland. When we got to dry land all our luggage was wet, after we picked up our wet luggage we went to a street to wait for the bus, we waited for about five minutes until the bus arrived after about a 45 minute ride where we got our room  assignments with a lot of confusion, we got off and unpacked our luggage. When we got to our rooms the power promptly shut off, leaving us without electricity. After about 20 minutes the power went back on. At 7:30 we had dinner, where there were songs and dances performed. During these performances, we had our meals which varied between tomato/avocado salad, tomato soup, and fried trout, pasta with chicken.
